Physiotherapists

Assess, treat & manage a wide variety of conditions.

A physiotherapist is usually the first port of call if someone is in pain.

Initial stage of rehab following an injury or surgery before being referred to a biokineticist for final phase rehabilitation.

A hands-on therapist who mostly deals with soft tissue manipulation.

Use tools such as electrical stimulation, massage, heat, ultrasound and dry needling to promote mobility, strength and healing in their patients.

Biokineticists

Use exercise as a tool for rehabilitation.

Use equipment such as cardio machines, resistance bands, free weights, balance equipment, tone balls & specialized sports apparatus during sessions.

Would typically see you once you have undergone the initial stages of rehabilitation with a physio following surgery or management of an injury.

When you are pain-free, or have learnt to manage your pain with a chronic or long term condition, you would begin a personalised exercise program with a biokineticist to achieve optimal strength, flexibility and fitness outcomes.

Focuses on sports performance, health promotion, exercise prescription for children, pregnant women & the elderly, as well as chronic disease management.

Chiropractors

Hands-on therapy to manipulate the musculoskeletal system.

They mobilize joints, especially the spine, to promote health.

Chiropractics is valuable if you have a traumatic event such as a fall or if you have repetitive stress on your body such as poor posture.

Adjustments can be made to the bones, ligaments, tendons and muscles of the body to provide pain relief.

This 2 minute video from the Biokinetics Association of South Africa also describes what Biokinetics is:

The Process

The Process

Seeing a biokineticist involves a simple 2 step process, consisting of an initial assessment and an exercise program customised to your specific needs.

Assessment

This is essential to determine where your weaknesses and imbalances lie. The mains aims of an assessment are to:

  • Determine which muscles are strong or weak

  • Test whether your muscles are short or long

  • Test whether you are activating your muscles in the correct sequence

  • Assess your posture, and how your daily routine might be influencing your body

  • Where relevant, test your cardiovascular fitness, body composition or your biomechanics.

An assessment is individualized according to your unique needs and goals, so please mention it if you have concerns about any of the following:

  • Cardiovascular fitness

  • Weight loss/ weight gain

  • Flexibility

  • Posture

  • Core stability

  • Biomechanics

  • Strength

  • Balance

  • Gross motor skills and co-ordination

  • Blood pressure and blood sugar levels

8 - 12 Week Exercise Program

Following an assessment you would begin an 8-12 week exercise program. Sessions may be as little as 30 minutes a week combined with a home exercise program, or you may need 120 minutes of supervised exercise over the course of a week. This will be discussed with you, and customised based on your needs.

Once your exercise program is complete, you will be re-evaluated to determine its success.

About Me

I have always been interested in movement. I was a very active child and discovered my passion for trapeze while I was at school. My love for performing took me all over the world and gave me a great sense of fulfilment.

After years of travelling and working, I wanted to expand my love for the human body and understand more about how it worked. I came back home to study Sport Recreation and Exercise Science at UWC and completed my Bsc Medical Science Honours (Biokinetics) at UCT.

Combining my knowledge with previous experience I hope to help adults and children achieve their full potential. Whether this is to reduce pain, improve sports performance, to enjoy exercise or for health benefits, I believe that with consistency and hard work anything is possible.
